Serves as a knowledge resource and uses independent judgment to help physicians plan the optimum management of toxicologic problems.  Serves as a knowledge resource and uses independent judgment to help physicians plan optimum management of animal bite victims with potential rabies exposures.  Has the responsibility for evaluating the toxic hazards and initiating appropriate management of toxicologic emergencies, potential rabies exposures, and problems presented by the public. Interacts with government emergency resources (fire, police, medical) in organizing response to toxic emergencies.  Reports all potential rabies exposures to Georgia State Department of Human Resources.  Represents the hospital through contacts with the news media and through community health programs.  Trains and supervises junior members of the poison center staff and participates in the training of house staff, medical students and other health care professionals.


  • Baccalaureate degree and/or degree in Pharmacy, Nursing (to include Associate Degree), Medical Doctor degree or similar health care profession as defined for eligibility for certification by the American Association of Poison Control Centers
  • Training and experience within the medical health field as a pharmacist, nurse, or medical doctor
  • One (1) year (2,000 hours) of experience as Poison Information Provider (desirable)
  • Must be certified by the American Association of Poison Control Centers (examination required) or obtain certification within 5 years of employment
  • Knowledge of the toxicologic applications of human physiology, chemistry pharmacology, action of drug, chemical and biologic toxins, information resources and their applications, pertinent toxicologic literature, medical terminology, systems of emergency management of this region
